Vanderbilt's teams are nicknamed the Commodores, in honor of the nickname given to Cornelius Vanderbilt, who made his fortune in shipping. Mr. Commodore, aka Mr. C, has led students and athletes to unparalleled success since 1873. The 2003 NCA Mascot National Champion is a jack-of-all trades.
